Freedom and Sexual Morality

Today, people often speak of sexual freedom, while at the same time also speaking of sexual morality. The two ideas are, in many ways, contradictory.

If sexual freedom truly exists, then everyone should be free to have sex with whomever they choose. Yet, at the same time, if we want to insult a woman, we call her a "slut," because sexual morality, fidelity, and modesty are still widely perceived as qualities that make a woman more attractive.

I believe this is partly instinctive, perhaps also linked to the certainty of paternity, which ultimately rests on trust in the woman.

The law reflects this contradiction. Prostitution is generally not a crime, because individuals are considered free to make their own sexual choices. However, it becomes a crime when others profit from it, because it is still regarded as something socially undesirable.
