The Tragedy of War
War is not a sporting competition where those who break the rules lose; it is a horrible tragedy where victory goes to those who use any means to win, however terrible.
Atrocities are inevitable due to hatred, fear, and revenge—not all combatants are blameless knights.
That there were also atrocities committed by the partisans is obvious; there's no need to read Pansa, just consider Bube's Girl, whose author was certainly not a fascist. The atmosphere was exactly as described, where Bube kills the marshal's son, a boy who had nothing to do with anything.
Later, in the 1970s, the sanctification of the partisans began.
Of course, the partisans were on the right side, but that does not mean they were exempt from the tragedy of war.
