The Opium of the People
For Marx, religion is the opium of the people: that is, it serves a function within the system objectively. This idea should not be confused with the notion of the deception and imposture of priests, as the positivists maintained.
Therefore, in this context, we cannot distinguish between a true religion and one used as an instrument of power, as very often happens.
For example, fascists were not Catholics, yet they exalted Catholicism.
