The Birth of Israel
There had already been immigration to Palestine since the beginning of the 20th century with the aim of creating a “Jewish homeland”: the reason was that, since religious aspects no longer served to define a people, there was a risk that Jews would assimilate into the peoples among whom they lived — as indeed was happening and continues to happen.
The madness of Nazism led to the Shoah, and thus the idea gained ground among Jews that they should no longer depend on the goodwill or tolerance of others, but should be able to defend themselves on their own.
