The Necessity of the State
We live in societies by nature, and a society always needs a power that can uphold its rules both internally and externally. We can then judge whether this power should be democratic, dictatorial, imperial, based on hereditary rulers, etc., etc.
In the past, the functions of the State were limited to the essential tasks of internal security (that is, maintaining order) and external defense.
With modern economic development, the State has taken on much broader functions: economic, educational, and healthcare functions. In the past, in fact, State expenditure was mainly devoted to the army, whereas today, for us Europeans, even 5% of the budget devoted to the military seems excessive.
