Well-Being and Organization

Resources increase not because they fall from the sky, but because we organize ourselves to produce them. Therefore, the more production increases, the more hierarchical organization is required. A community of gatherers has very little to organize and can be led by someone with somewhat greater abilities; modern industrial society—or, by now, I would say, the information society—on the other hand, requires an immense organizational structure.

If I now press a key and someone else receives what I write, it is because electricity exists, generated from fuels found in distant countries, and so on. In practice, I can communicate via the web because millions upon millions of people carry out their respective tasks. Guiding all this therefore requires managers and, consequently, a highly complex hierarchy. Indeed, in a real democracy, only a few people at the top are elected, while the vast majority of managers are certainly not elected.

Thinking that an organization of this kind could function by allowing everyone to do whatever they think is appropriate would be madness.
