Tradition and Innovation

Tradition is often contrasted with innovation, but in reality tradition is made up of those innovations that have proved to be worthwhile. Not everything that is new is necessarily more desirable. However, it seems to me that what is truly valuable in the new endures, while what is not desirable eventually disappears.

Therefore, in the long run, we can say that our descendants will live in a better world—that is, a world that better reflects what people value and desire—as, after all, has always been the case.
