A Lie Repeated

As Goebbels used to say, a lie repeated over and over again eventually becomes accepted as the truth. Ironically, Goebbels himself became a victim of this very mechanism: he and his wife committed suicide and also caused the deaths of their six children—a truly unprecedented tragedy.

Something similar happened in Okinawa, where some mothers threw themselves into the sea while holding their young children, so convinced had they become that defeat meant there was no future except death.

In reality, however, after the war both Germany and Japan rose again and went on to assume leading roles in the world—roles they had vainly sought to achieve through war.
