Culture and Critical Thinking
We are social beings. We follow the culture of the world we live in, and only a few people are capable of adopting a critical attitude toward it—and even then, only in a relative and partial way.
Consider the human sacrifices of the Aztecs, performed to give strength to the sun, or the Roman mother (I emphasize mother) who handed her son his shield, saying: "Return with it or on it." And so on.
We, too, are convinced that our own beliefs are correct. But in a hundred years—or perhaps much sooner—our descendants may regard us as mad, just as we judge our fascist or communist grandparents today.
