Aggressions
When
we talk about borders, states, and acts of aggression, we are referring
to the world as it exists at the moment we live in.
But throughout history, borders and states have constantly changed. For
example, in our wars of independence we attacked Austria, taking
territories from it. Were we the “bad” aggressors? It depends on one’s
point of view: we see ourselves as the good side and the Austrians as
the bad side, along with the many Italians who supported Austria.
Now, if Austria wanted
Lombardy-Venetia back, would we consider them the aggressors?
If the Germans wanted the Sudetenland or Danzig back; the Italians,
Istria; the Greeks, southern Turkey where they had lived since the dawn
of history—there would be endless conflicts. Peace presupposes the
status quo.
