Abortion and Euthanasia

Euthanasia raises a different issue from abortion. In euthanasia, there is a person who decides they no longer want to live but does not have the means to commit suicide. So the question is: do we have the right to take our own life? If we answer yes, then it seems right—indeed, one might say necessary—to help those who wish to die (euthanasia).

In the case of abortion, however, the issue is whether the fertilized egg is a human being or not: if we answer yes, then under no circumstances can it be destroyed.

In the first case, no one doubts that it is a human being; in the second, the doubt is precisely whether it is or is not a human being.
