Crisis of the Left

If by “the left” we mean that political side which represents the interests of the less well-off, then why, for example, define Trump as right-wing when his electoral base is mainly made up of middle America, that is, the less affluent, while his opponents are concentrated in the wealthier metropolises such as New York and San Francisco?
Immigration benefits the richer and harms the poorer because it leads to lower wages; globalization causes industries to shut down and poorer people to lose jobs because goods from poorer countries are cheaper.
Why, then, should LGBT issues concern the poor more? Are they not in fact felt more strongly by the wealthier?
The problem, it seems to me, is that many issues that would belong to the wealthier are supported by the left, and vice versa.
