Great Powers
It seems entirely inevitable to me that those
who are strong are less constrained than those who are weaker; precisely for
this reason a united Europe is hoped for.
However, it should also be noted that being a superpower also entails heavy
costs and burdensome responsibilities: for example, it was the United States
that bore many expenses and suffered many casualties during the Cold War and in
the fight against Islamic fundamentalism, while Europe spent little and suffered
almost no losses.
The idea promoted by Trump, in fact, is a withdrawal from the role of being the
world’s policeman—a role that is costly and bloody.
