Theology and Ethics
Theological debates were once so important as
to spark bloody conflicts: one need only think of the Christological disputes or
of free will during the Reformation, but now they have lost interest and are
taken for granted.
I think the problems of the Catholic Church lie elsewhere and concern its
compatibility with the modern world. For example, there is the silent, de facto
secession of Catholics as a whole from teachings that the Church stubbornly
continues to uphold regarding sexual morality: premarital relations and, above
all, contraception.
