State and Ethics

It is not that what the State decides is right (the ethical state), but rather that it is simply imposed as if it were. In every era the problem arises of whether one should follow the laws of the State when they appear to be contrary to the morality one follows.

In general, morality prevails over state law: for example in Antigone by Sophocles; in modern times, conscientious objection is sometimes accepted.
