It was a
horrible event, but it seemed like a useful means to derail the Abraham Accords
(that is, the Arab recognition of Israel) on the part of those who see not a
conflict to reclaim a small strip of land, but a metaphysical struggle between
believers and unbelievers, between good and evil, against the Great and the
Little Satans.
The massive destruction of Gaza, with so many deaths, aims to convince Hamas’s
followers that the war to destroy Israel brings only catastrophe, that Allah the
Merciful does not intervene to defend His believers.
Hamas’s objective seems to have failed; the Arab states did nothing to help the
Palestinians. I have no idea whether Israel can achieve its goal—or the opposite.
What seems clear to me is that the demonstrations in the West do not help the
Palestinians at all, but rather encourage them even more toward the ruin of
jihad (holy war).
