Recognition of Palestine

What does “the Palestinians” mean? There are those, like Hamas, who want to “liberate Palestine from the river to the sea,” that is, to destroy Israel, and those like Abu Mazen who would like only a two-state solution.
The problem is that Palestine, as a state, collapsed before it was even formed. Elections were held, but their results were not respected: Hamas and the PLO divided the territory, and in Gaza, besides Hamas, there is also Islamic Jihad, while Abu Mazen has little following even in the West Bank.
So who, then, represents the Palestinians?
What does it mean to recognize the Palestinian state if it doesn’t exist? It is only a hope that one day it might be formed — I, in any case, would be in favor.
