An Unwanted War
I would say that the Ukrainian conflict is one
that neither side wanted, yet it nevertheless broke out (as Mattarella also said
about World War I).
Putin wanted to carry out a coup (“special operation”), but it failed. So he
fell back on the conquest of Russian-speaking territories. An agreement was
taking shape (similar to the one being proposed today), but Ukraine believed it
could defeat Russia with Western support — at least overthrow Putin. They did
not succeed, and the war goes on endlessly.
