Cold War
During the Cold War, economic aid and military
protection for Europe were necessary for the U.S. in order to contain communism
(as it was said at the time); it was not a matter of goodwill but a political
and military necessity. Naturally, this was seen by our local communists as an
American imposition, and by democrats as a necessary form of support.
At present, the Americans no longer have an enemy to contain in Europe and
therefore demand (Trump) that Europeans should finance their own common defense.
