Catholics today accept and support religious freedom.
In reality, until some time ago (a short span in the measure of history), the freedom of opinion was not conceived of in any field, and therefore not in religion either. When it became established in all other fields, it was then accepted in the religious sphere as well (albeit after a long conflict).
It must be clarified that freedom of opinion does not mean that everything is true and everything is false, but rather that everyone holds their opinion to be the true one, yet respects the opinions of others. In a democracy, decisions are made by the majority.
