Liberalism and Socialism
In our world, the ideas of absolute liberalism or absolute socialism are supported only by a few eccentric ideologues. In reality, however, both appear to be necessary, and the political problem lies in finding a balance between them.
Liberalism leads to greater development because in economic activities, everyone acts for their own economic gain (the "Saint Francis" types don't engage in economic activity). But, ethical reasons aside, if poverty runs rampant, there will be no buyers, and therefore no goods will be produced.
