 Evaluating Civilizations

If you are evaluating something, you need a standard of judgment. When we evaluate a civilization, what do we use as a reference?

For a Muslim, for example, it's conformity to Sharia law. In that case, we are the worst of the worst, devils to be exterminated perhaps.

Or we can consider the level of well-being we live in, and in that case, we are undoubtedly the superior civilization.

So the question is: do you prefer to live in a world where children don't die en masse, don't cry from hunger, where there is hot water, refrigerators, washing machines, cars, televisions, cell phones, etc., or in a world where women break their backs washing clothes and men are exhausted from fatigue for a crust of bread?

I prefer the first way, but I can understand that someone might think it's better to live in the second world while following Sharia, or being closer to nature, and so on.
