Conformity
I don't believe that conforming to the majority is always done for personal gain; sometimes, not conforming can even be advantageous.
We are part of a group whose principles and knowledge we learned as children, and thus we end up considering them obvious and certain. In general, social interaction also assumes that we share beliefs and opinions that characterize the group we belong to.
