Recognition of
Palestine
Following the tragedy in Gaza, many states are preparing to recognize the State of Palestine. Undoubtedly, this seems to me a fair gesture toward the two-state solution that we in the West all support.
However, it must also be noted that the State of Palestine effectively collapsed before even being fully established.
After the elections, Palestine split in two: in the West Bank, the Palestinian Authority (PA) prevailed, while in Gaza, Hamas took over — throwing PA representatives off rooftops. The election results were not respected, and no further elections were held.
The Israelis then withdrew from Gaza, which until the current war was in practice a state of its own.
Now, recognizing Palestine may be a noble gesture — but who, in fact, should be considered the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people?
The PA, which recognizes Israel and supports the two-state solution, but appears to have little real influence or prestige? Or Hamas, which dragged Gaza into a tragic war with Israel, clinging to what seems to us a delusional hope of destroying Israel?
If it's not possible to identify who truly represents the Palestinians, then recognizing Palestine as a state remains merely a symbolic act — without any practical consequences.
