Politics and Ethics
In the
modern world, with the direct appeal to God no longer in use, the idea remains
that the state should uphold what is right and good: slavery, the exploitation
of workers, inequality, and the reduction of women to objects are prohibited by
law because they are unjust, while support for children, the poor, the sick,
etc., is promoted because it is just. This is not a game of winners and losers.
The problem is that we are not always aware that the concept of what is just
changes over time: we cannot judge the present by the standards of the past —
and even less the past by the standards of the present.
