Catastrophes and Religion
Catastrophes are seen as divine punishment for
the evil committed by humans, and their end is attributed to divine mercy (for
Catholics: also mediated by the saints).
In short, whatever happens can always be interpreted in a religious key.
I would say that in times of danger and misfortune, people feel a stronger need
for the consoling presence of the divine.
For example, the world war strengthened religious feeling, whereas I see that
the age of prosperity and consumerism has reduced it to the bare minimum.
