China and Democracy
After traveling a bit through China, I
witnessed incredible progress: in just a few decades, it has gone from a vast
sprawl of shacks to a forest of skyscrapers.
And yet, there is no democracy in China, and the idea that progress would
automatically lead to democracy has proven completely wrong.
One might say that well-being matters more than democracy; that democracy has
its flaws too; and that, in the end, those who truly value freedom are just a
minority.
Voter turnout, after all, seems to be steadily declining.
