Wars and
Interests
Wars are
always fought for national interest, not to
export democracy or other principles. However,
it can happen that the two coincide.
For example, in World War II, the U.S. fought
because it felt threatened, but the restoration
of democracy (in Italy, Germany, and Japan) was
a means to consolidate victory.
Similarly, during the Cold War, the preservation
of democracies (where possible) was the most
effective way to fight communism.
