Abraham Accords
Dismantling
the settlements as a prerequisite for a two-state solution: on this, we
Westerners all agree.
The problem is that Hamas does not want
two states; it wants to destroy Israel in a metaphysical struggle between good
and evil. Similarly, the Haredim (Jewish
fundamentalists) want all of Palestine as a divine inheritance.
Now, the Haredim are, for the moment,
only a minority—but if the Israeli majority sees that the Palestinians want to
destroy them, then they feel they have no choice but to destroy the Palestinians.
In short, the precondition for any possible peace (not necessarily a just one,
but a possible one) depends on the acceptance of Israel’s existence, as began to
happen with the Abraham Accords.
October 7 was a means used by Hamas (effective
for now) to push those accords into the attic.
