Surrogacy
and Compensation
I believe that,
in theory, payment is prohibited even in
countries where surrogacy is allowed. The
problem is that it’s hard to verify whether a
woman is offering her womb purely out of
altruism and not in exchange for financial
compensation.
It seems unlikely that a woman would go through
all the challenges of pregnancy and childbirth
solely to give another woman the joy of becoming
a mother. This might happen among close
relatives—sisters, for example—and I’ve even
heard of some cases involving a mother and
daughter.
