would say that what is new in our time is that all the movements that aimed to
eliminate Christianity have themselves disappeared—the last and most relentless
being communism.
This helps explain the overwhelming turnout at Pope Francis’ funeral, as well as
the fact that, even though no one heeded his calls for peace, everyone
nonetheless appreciated him; no one openly challenged him (perhaps only
Netanyahu).
When Pope Pius IX’s funeral was held, crowds even wanted to throw his body into
the Tiber—something unthinkable today.
